"un voyage": photography by jean luc dushime

Jean Luc Dushime became a Cafe maestro at New Moon in the summer of 2008. As we got to know Jean Luc, we got to hear more and more of his story - an incredible account of escaping the genocide in Rwanda and courageously journeying as a refugee until resettling here in Burlington. (Read a detailed interview with Jean here.)

We are proud to display is first photography exhibition entitled "Un Voyage." Quite simply, it's a visual narrative of his recent cross-country road trip, something that lots of Americans take for granted but Jean found to be truly profound and life changing. As he puts it, this was the first time he ever traveled by choice; as a refugee, he was forced and pressured to move from place to place. This trip was real freedom.

Jean Luc also has a deep desire to impact African people who have come to the US as refugees; he wants them to know that there is hope to achieve great things, to see big dreams come to fruition. "Inspiration is the key to change," he says. If one of his friends here in Burlington or elsewhere can see these photos and get inspired to change their life for the better, then Jean feels his mission is accomplished.

Come by the Cafe and enjoy this exhibition. And maybe buy a print with your latte.

Well update...

Last summer and fall we hosted an exhibit from Freedom in Creation, an art and clean water initiative for war-affected people in Uganda.

Over the course of the exhibit we raised enough money to support a new well in the Pany Cwalla Village, represented in the photos above. This is just one of the many initiatives that New Moon facilitates alongside its nonprofit partner 150 Cherry St.

Awesome!

LJ Spring Photography

(download)

We have some brilliant photography on display from Vermont artist LJ Spring.

Here's what she says about her work:

"...be it planned or simply spontaneous, I want diversity to show through in my work. I shoot an image in its original setting, then play with contrast and shadows to subdue the scene. Changing apertures to lighten or 'open up' a shot makes me feel as if I'm leading a double life as painter and photographer!

"...shooting 'en plenair' or available light only, I expect variations that nature can bring. It's as much an attraction as the diversities of the scenes I shoot. The two basic shades of my black and white pieces demand to me more imagination. They are distracting in that they let the viewer stay focused on light and dark, that's it.

"...my hope is that these photographs not only take you places but that they (almost) remove you from the surface reality, making you delve deeper into the image where line, tone and contrast meet, giving the shots their own life! ... Enjoy the ride!"

Enjoy the ride, indeed! Stop in and check out LJ's work!

New Moon Catering in Action

(download)

Many folks don't know this, but New Moon caters both in-house and off-site events. Here are some amazing pictures from a recent reception right in our Cafe space.

If you or your organization would like New Moon to cater an event, check out this page for more information.

Poker Hill Arts

(download)

Come check out our exhibit by Poker Hill Arts - a nonprofit after-school art program for kids in Chittenden County. There are actual pieces created by kids to be admired, as well as pieces created by founder and instructor Chris Gluck for sale.

And there are printed card sets for sale, too, for just $10. The proceeds from the card sets will benefit Project Graduation for Mount Mansfield Union High School, so consider buying one (or five) - MMU students really deserve it this year!

Dressings!

No one does salads like quite New Moon. They are big, colorful, fresh, and luxurious. And to top it all off (pun intended), they are tossed with incredible housemade dressings.

Now, for $6.99, you can have that same New Moon salad flava in your house, too.

Come get some, in Sesame, Pear, Dijon, and Balsamic.

The legend of Nantucket

(download)

There are a few legends around here.

Like the legend of just how cold press coffee is made.

And the legend of just how - and why - the Nantucket chicken salad sandwich arrives on New Moon plates, in all of its glory, and tastes so good, every time.

It's a legend that we will attempt to unravel in future posts.

For now, know this: the legend is no longer limited to a once-weekly special.

The Nantucket is on the menu all day, everyday.

So stop by soon, and enjoy the legend.

New photography on display

Come by the Cafe soon and check out our newest art on display!

"Somewhere Else" is a series of photographs by Julie Goldstone exploring "detaching and ephemeral rhythms; it is about the realities we choose to ignore, the dreams we create, and the space that we inhabit to make our own."

Here is a little sampling:

New Moon sponsors a sweet fundraiser!

Img_1899

This past Sunday, New Moon sponsored the Got Guts? Community Climbing Day at the Petra Cliffs Climbing Center. We donated gift cards and cookies to benefit amazing nonprofits like Burlington Freestyle and The Chill Foundation. This guy was certainly a happy camper when he won a $25 gift card in a raffle!
