Jean Luc Dushime became a Cafe maestro at New Moon in the summer of 2008. As we got to know Jean Luc, we got to hear more and more of his story - an incredible account of escaping the genocide in Rwanda and courageously journeying as a refugee until resettling here in Burlington. (Read a detailed interview with Jean here.)

We are proud to display is first photography exhibition entitled "Un Voyage." Quite simply, it's a visual narrative of his recent cross-country road trip, something that lots of Americans take for granted but Jean found to be truly profound and life changing. As he puts it, this was the first time he ever traveled by choice; as a refugee, he was forced and pressured to move from place to place. This trip was real freedom.

Jean Luc also has a deep desire to impact African people who have come to the US as refugees; he wants them to know that there is hope to achieve great things, to see big dreams come to fruition. "Inspiration is the key to change," he says. If one of his friends here in Burlington or elsewhere can see these photos and get inspired to change their life for the better, then Jean feels his mission is accomplished.

Last summer and fall we hosted an exhibit from Freedom in Creation, an art and clean water initiative for war-affected people in Uganda.

Over the course of the exhibit we raised enough money to support a new well in the Pany Cwalla Village, represented in the photos above. This is just one of the many initiatives that New Moon facilitates alongside its nonprofit partner 150 Cherry St.

We have some brilliant photography on display from Vermont artist LJ Spring. 

Here's what she says about her work:

"...be it planned or simply spontaneous, I want diversity to show through in my work. I shoot an image in its original setting, then play with contrast and shadows to subdue the scene. Changing apertures to lighten or 'open up' a shot makes me feel as if I'm leading a double life as painter and photographer!

"...shooting 'en plenair' or available light only, I expect variations that nature can bring. It's as much an attraction as the diversities of the scenes I shoot. The two basic shades of my black and white pieces demand to me more imagination. They are distracting in that they let the viewer stay focused on light and dark, that's it.

"...my hope is that these photographs not only take you places but that they (almost) remove you from the surface reality, making you delve deeper into the image where line, tone and contrast meet, giving the shots their own life! ... Enjoy the ride!"

Come check out our exhibit by Poker Hill Arts - a nonprofit after-school art program for kids in Chittenden County. There are actual pieces created by kids to be admired, as well as pieces created by founder and instructor Chris Gluck for sale.

And there are printed card sets for sale, too, for just $10. The proceeds from the card sets will benefit Project Graduation for Mount Mansfield Union High School, so consider buying one (or five) - MMU students really deserve it this year!

There are a few legends around here.

The performer at tonight's Sound Effect, Tiffany Pfeiffer, is awesome. In fact, she's my personal all-time favorite Sound Effect performer of all time, personally speaking.

Oh yes, and that's because there is no way to express my enthusiasm for Tiffany and the Discarnate Band other than through effulgent redundancies.
